External Reprocessing For Dental Devices
Large dental practices are discovering the benefit of external reprocessing for their reusable devices. In 2022 Victorian Dentists will get the first opportunity to contract out reprocessing, providing several commercial and compliance benefits.
Continuing changes to reprocessing standards will mean greater capital costs and more reprocessing space forced upon health care services to meet higher reprocessing standards. External reprocessing helps to mitigate future capital costs and additional space requirements.
External reprocessing is simpler than you think:
-
Minimal disruption to your workflow.
-
Next day delivery of your sterile instruments.
-
Transport trolleys and ridged containers provided.
-
Full tracking and traceability.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE STANDARDS
Sterequip reprocesses to a higher standard than the current AS/NZS 4815 for “Office-based health care facilities – Reprocessing of reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of the associated environment”.
Sterequip meets the AS/NZS 4187 “Cleaning, disinfecting and sterilising reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of associated environments in health care facilities”.
In July 2019 the Australian Dental Association stated “The Dental Board of Australia expects all registered dental practitioners to comply with and have access to a copy of the NHMRC Guidelines as well as the ADA Guidelines and the relevant standards AS/NZ 4815 or AS/NZ 4187.”
AS/NZS 4815:2006
Office-Based Health Care Facilities need to ensure:
- Documented infection control protocols
- Clearly identified clean and dirty zones
- Sterilising equipment or ultrasonic cleaners
- Maintain staff knowledge of infection control
- Ultimately the owner of the facility is responsible
AS/NZS 4187:2014
Brought a Higher Requirement to Reprocessing in Regards to:
- More stringent water quality
- Device identification and traceability
- Higher standard for washer and sterilisation equipment
- Segregation and unidirectional workflow and airflow to reduce the risk of cross-contamination
A NEW STANDARD IS COMING…
Standards Australia is currently working on a new standard AS 5369 “Reprocessing of reusable medical devices and other devices in health and non-health related facilities” which has closed for public comment and is under review.
It could mean dentists have to redevelop their reprocessing space to meet a new standard. This can be costly and time consuming.
